John Wayne - Ref Pic and WIPs by Rick-Kills-Pencils John Wayne - Ref Pic and WIPs by Rick-Kills-Pencils
Thought I would show you the reference photo (upper left) and 2 WIPs with the Final drawing. As you can see, I do NOT ALWAYS draw what I see, but sometimes I change some things that either do not look natural, or I think I like better (background, etc) Sometimes I DO try to draw EXACTLY like the photo, but not always. After all, a drawing is SUPPOSED to be an "artistic interpretation" of a subject. This is mine :D:D

Do you think drawing from a photo makes for a more "flat image" than drawing from life? I had an art instructor tell me this once.

Honesty? Never tried drawing from life. It would NOT be realism style, cuz they wouldn't hold still for 12 hours lol :D:D

The only technique that I have found for this is doing the quick light sketch and then coming back. I have had studio models that will hold still for about twenty minutes. Long enough for me to get the basics down and then I go back in and make changes. Maybe a hybrid? Model and photo? Might be fun.

The cheapest easy way to get models and studio time is to take a life drawing class at a community college. I took a few classes at my local community college and there were three professional artists in the class just for that very reason. Just take the class for zero credits and you don't have to do any extra homework.

still your drawing looks very similar to the photo :D
your drawings are really great.
and it is very true what you wrote :) it is important to be satisfied how drawing looks and not everything have to be exact as it is in a photo :)
